Birdwatching

I guess I took twenty-some pictures, but this little woodpecker kept making his way around to the other side of the tree just as I’d snap.  I need a longer lens!  My bird watching hobby obsession has definitely rubbed off on my girls; Lulu came bursting into the house this afternoon to alert me of this fellow’s presence.  Now if I could only get better at identifying them!  I’ve perused the Cornell Ornithology website, but I’m still not sure.  Here’s another picture, which was quite overblown, that I’ve fiddled with a bit so you can see his red head.

Any ideas?

In other bird-related news, we heard an owl tonight!  Oh, how I’d love to get a look at it!

  1. My guess from the pictures would be a Harry Woodpecker. We have a Northern Flicker that has been delighting us, this week – so much fun!

  2. Excuse me – I mean hairy not harry :)

We are bird watchers here too! A couple weeks back we actually heard one a discovered it sitting on our chimney. Our best detective work led us to find it was a great horned owl giving off a mating call. You could here the answering owl in the distance.
